05-What? : An application
to convert your Israeli Cell Phone numbers on your Palm Organizer
|
|
The 05-What? application is used to automatically
convert Israeli cell phone numbers on your Palm Organizer to
their new format. Until recently, Israeli cell phone numbers had
a 3 digit area code (05x or 06x) followed by a 6 digit number. As
of April 20, 2004 the numbering system has been changed. Each Israeli
cell phone provider now has only one area code that starts with
05 and is followed by one additional digit. The area code is now
followed by a 7 digit number. It is possible to continue dialing
the old numbers for a period of 6 months - until October 31, 2004.
During that period both old and new numbers can be used.
There are 3 modes of operation for the 05-What? application:
Test Mode
Preview Mode
Convert Mode (can only be used if you have
registered 05-What?)
|
| SET UP |
The first time you run 05-What?, the
program will check your Address Book for records in Hebrew. If it
finds any Hebrew records, you will be given the option to
select the User Interface Language. You can choose English
or Hebrew by tapping the appropriate button.
|
|
You can always switch the language between
Hebrew and English by opening the menu on the main screen,
and selecting Change Language from the Options
menu. If you don’t have Hebrew on your Palm, then don’t change
the language to Hebrew.
|
|
Before you begin using 05-What?, you will
need to select the Converted Number Format. The selected
format will only apply to numbers that were previously formatted
with a separator between the two groups of 3 digits in the
six digit number. The separator that is in the original
number will be used as the separator for the converted number.
The separator can be a dash '-', period '.', or a space.
If the original number didn't have a separator between the
two groups of 3 digits, the new number won't have a separator
either.
|
|
05-What? supports three different formats.
If the original number is formatted as:
055-536-128
The new number can be formatted as:
-
054-5-536-128 (new digit with
a separator)
-
054-553-6128 (3 digits, separator,4
digits)
-
054-5536-128 (4 digits, separator,
3 digits)
|
|
In order to select the format, check the appropriate
checkbox under the New Formatted Number label and
tap the OK button.
|
|
|
| TEST MODE |
|
In Test Mode, you can enter an old format number
in the text field, and convert it to a new number by tapping
the Test button.
The results of the conversion will be displayed
in the New Number field. The format of the New Number
is based on the format of the Old Number and the format
that you selected.
Tap the Clear button to clear the fields
so that you can enter another number.
|
|
|
If you have registered 05-What?, you can use
Test Mode to convert individual cell phone numbers that you
might have in other applications, like the Memo Pad. After
you register, if you tap the Test button and the Old
Number field is blank, the contents of the clipboard will
be inserted into the field (you can put a number into the
clipboard by selecting the number and doing a "copy"). The
New Number will automatically be copied to the clipboard,
so that it can be pasted back into the Memo Pad (or any other
application) This allows registered users to convert individual
numbers from the old format to the new format in a very convenient
way.
|
|
| PREVIEW MODE |
In Preview Mode, you will be able to see exactly
what 05-What? will do when you convert your Address Book.
When you tap the Preview button, you will then see
the Select Fields form.
On this form, there are 19 checkboxes corresponding
to the 19 fields i n the Address Book. You will need to
check each field that you want 05-What? to look at in order
to find your cell phone numbers.
|
|
If you are using certain fields for information
that you know doesn't contain phone numbers, then don't
check those fields. Although 05-What? knows how to recognize
a cell phone number, there are situations where you might
have numbers that look like cell phone numbers, but aren't
(e.g., Bank Account number, ID Number, Teudat Zehut number,
etc.). The checkboxes on the left side are the fields that
are most likely to contain phone numbers. The checkboxes
on the right should not be checked unless you know that
one of those fields is being used for phone numbers and
may contain a cell phone number. Once you've checked the
fields that you want to check, tap the Continue button.
If you do not want to preview the records, tap the Cancel
button.
|
Once you tap the Continue button the
address book will be scanned.
|
|
At the end of the scanning, you will see how
many records were found in the fields that you selected.
Tap the OK button.
|
|
05-What? will then go through your address
book one record at a time, and show you each number that
would be converted. It will display the name of each record,
followed by the current number and the new number. If there
is more than one number to be converted in any record, each
number will be displayed individually.
After displaying the number(s) to be converted
for each record, you will be asked if you want to continue.
|
|
To continue, tap Yes. To stop, tap
No.
|
|
|
| REGISTER |
|
In order to convert the cell phone numbers in your Address Book,
you must register 05-What?.
After your registration is processed, you
will receive an email from us within 1 to 2 days, with your
registration key.
Enter the 8 digit registration key, and tap
the Register button.

|
| CONVERT MODE |
Convert Mode is used to perform the actual conversion
of numbers in your Address Book. In order to do this, you must register
05-What?.
Before you do the actual conversion, you should make
sure that you have made a backup copy of your current Address Book.
If there are any problems during the conversion process, you will
be able to restore your original data, or view it in the future.
|
To back up your Address Book, do the following:
1 Do a HotSync
2 Open the Palm
Desktop on your computer
3 Click the Address
or Contacts icon on the left side in order to view
your Address Book
4 Click on File
in the upper left corner of the Palm desktop
5 Click on Export.
6 Specify an appropriate
name for the file, and save it in a folder where you'll remember
that you saved it.
7 The Export
Type (under the file name) should be either Contacts
Archive (*.aba) or Address Archive (*.aba) depending
on which version of the Palm desktop you're using. Just use
the default selection for the Export Type.
8 Make sure to
specify All for the Range
9 Click on the
Export button
You have now made a backup copy of your address
book. If you find a problem, you can import the saved copy
of your address book, or just view it by selecting Open
Archive from the File menu (when you're viewing
the Address Book), and opening the file that you saved.
|
When you tap the Convert button, you'll
be reminded about doing the backup, and you'll be given
a chance to cancel by tapping the No button. If you
are ready to do the conversion, tap the Yes button.
|
|
The Select Fields form has 19 checkboxes corresponding
to the 19 fields in the Address Book. You will need to check
each field that you want 05-What? to look at in order to
find your cell phone numbers.
If you are using certain fields for information that you
know doesn't contain phone numbers, then don't check those
fields.
Although 05-What? knows how to recognize a cell phone number,
there are situations where you might have numbers that look
like cell phone numbers, but aren't (e.g., Bank Account
number, ID Number, Teudat Zehut number, etc.).
|
|
The checkboxes on the left side are the ones
that are most likely to contain phone numbers. The checkboxes
on the right should not be checked unless you know that
one of those fields is being used for phone numbers and
may contain a cell phone number.
When 05-What? checks for a cell phone number,
it will use stricter rules when it's looking at all fields
except the Phone 1 - Phone 5 fields. If a number
is in one of the Phone fields, there's a very good chance
that it is a real phone number. However, if there's a number
in one of the other fields, it's possible that it looks
like a cell phone number but isn't. So, the checking in
those other fields will be stricter.
In all fields besides the Phone fields, a 9 digit number
with no spaces and no separators will not be treated as
a cell phone number, and a number that has 8 digits followed
by a '-' and another digit (this could be a "Teudat Zehut"
number) will not be recognized as a cell phone number.
If you don't want to continue, tap the Cancel
button. If you don't want to automatically convert all of
the numbers in the selected fields, then check the Confirm
Update checkbox at the top of the form. If you check
this, you will be asked to confirm each number that will
be converted. When you're ready to do the conversion, tap
the Continue button.
|
If you didn't check the Confirm Update
checkbox, the automatic processing will begin. As the records
are being converted, you will see how many records are in
the Address Book, and how many have been processed. The
conversion process should not take too long, but this is
very dependent on the number of records in your Address
Book, and the speed of the Palm device that you have.
|
|
When the conversion process is completed,
you will be given a summary of how many numbers were converted.
|
|
Processing an address book containing 2000
records and approximately 500 cell phone numbers required
29 seconds on a Palm IIIc, 22 seconds on a Palm Vx, 16 seconds
on an m505, 6 seconds on a Zire 71, and 5 seconds on a Tungsten
T3.
|
If you're not sure about converting numbers
in certain fields, you might want to automatically convert
the fields that you're sure about, and then go back and
convert the other fields using the Confirm Update
option.
|
|
If you check the Confirm Update checkbox,
you will be asked to confirm the conversion of each number
that is found in the selected fields of the Address book.
After you tap the Continue button the address book
will be scanned, before the conversion begins, you will
see how many records were found in the fields that you selected.
